There are three different levels of participants:

Fellowship Conductors       $1450 plus $65 non-refundable registration fee

Associate   Conductors        $750 plus $60 non-refundable registration fee

Auditor                                $350 plus $50 non-refundable registration fee

All waitlisted applicants will receive a numbered placement on the waitlist for masterclass participation.

CONDUCTING FELLOWSHIP

Course Fee: $1,450

No more than nine conductors will be chosen. 

All Fellowship Conductors will:

  • Conduct one Public Concert.

  • Conduct 3 Full Orchestra Rehearsals.

  • Conduct 2 string quartet and piano rehearsals in your choice of a movement from the listed repertoire

  • Conduct 1 coaching on a movement or work of your choice with piano. (from the institute repertoire.)

  • Compete in the 2019 Smoky Mountain International Conductors Competition for the Pierre Monteux Grand Prize.

  • Participate in baton technique classes based on Maestro Oltman's study with Pierre Monteux and Max Rudolf.

  • Participate in technique sessions geared towards mixed meter music and audition preparation. The music to be focused on is Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du Soldat and Copland’s Appalachian Spring.

  • Be eligible to receive mentoring from Maestro Oltman after the workshop upon request.

  • Attend class sessions dealing with score study and style and interpretation in all of the chosen repertoire plus a discussion of preparing a baroque choral work.

  • Hear an Introduction to Ballet Conducting from Maestro Oltman based on his 36 years of experience in this challenging field.

  • Receive a video recording via email of every time they conduct the orchestra including in the rehearsals.(Only after the institute. We strongly encourage all conductors to record themselves with their own private cameras.)

  • Join in video review sessions after select rehearsals.

  • Informal sessions where participants have the opportunity to speak with Maestro Oltman on a free range of musical topics.

  • Observe the other conductors working with Maestro Oltman and the SMICI Orchestra.

  • Observe Maestro Oltman conducting rehearsals and at the concert of the SMICI Orchestra and Chamber Choir.

Associate Conductors

Course Fee: $750

This category will be limited to four participants. 

Associate Conductors will participate fully in everything that the Fellowship conductors do with the exception of the final two orchestra rehearsals and the concert.

All Associate Conductors will:

  • Conduct 1 masterclass orchestra rehearsal with free choice of repertoire from the Institute repertoire list.

  • Conduct 2 string quartet and piano rehearsals with free choice of repertoire from the Institute repertoire list.

  • Conduct a work or movement of your choice from the listed repertoire in a masterclass lesson with piano.

  • Conduct 1 coaching on a movement or work of your choice with piano.

  • Participate in baton technique classes based on Maestro Oltman's study with Pierre Monteux and Max Rudolf.

AUDITOR

We only accept a limited number of Auditors so apply early!

Auditors participate in everything except conducting the string quartet/piano and the orchestra. 

All Auditors will:

  • Conduct a work or movement of your choice from the listed repertoire in a masterclass lesson with piano.

  • Participate in baton technique classes based on Maestro Oltman's study with Pierre Monteux and Max Rudolf.

  • Attend class sessions dealing with score study and style and interpretation in all of the chosen repertoire plus a discussion of preparing a baroque choral work.

  • Hear an Introduction to Ballet Conducting from Maestro Oltman based on his 36 years of experience in this challenging field.

  • Informal sessions where participants have the opportunity to speak with Maestro Oltman on a free range of musical topics.

  • Observe the Fellow and Associate Conductors working with Maestro Oltman and the SMICI Orchestra.

  • Observe rehearsals of Maestro Oltman conducting the SMICI Orchestra and Chamber Choir and attend the concert.

Smoky mountain international chamber orchestra

The outstanding professionals in the SMICI members are mostly members of the Asheville and Greenville (SC) Symphony Orchestras with additional musicians from the Charlotte Symphony Orchestras.

A special feature of SMICI is that Fellowship Conductors have the opportunity to prepare and conduct a public performance.
